WALLINGFORD - Joseph "Joe" James Pizzi, 74, of Wallingford, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Susan (Kosik) Pizzi. Joe was born on April 12, 1940 in Scranton, PA, the son of the late George and Theresa (Scandale) Pizzi. Joe graduated from St. Patrick High School in Scranton, PA and attended Middlesex College in Middletown, CT. Prior to his move to Connecticut in 1967 he served in the U.S. Navy. Until his retirement in 1999 Joe was employed by Pratt & Whitney.
In recent years, he worked for Cheshire Senior Center. He enjoyed time spent as a volunteer at the Wallingford Masonic Healthcare Center. Also, Joe was active in various communities as a football referee / clock operator throughout New Haven and Shoreline counties. Joe looked forward to returning annually to Pennsylvania for the past 50 years to participate in the sport of deer hunting.
Throughout the last five years of his life his greatest pleasure was his granddaughter Grace. Nothing gave him more pleasure and happiness than seeing and talking with her.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his two sons: Joseph of New Milford, CT; Stephen and his wife Dana of Spring, TX; brother Tony and his wife Muriel, Durham, CT and sister Georgia Pizzi Liberatori, Clarks Summit, PA; granddaughter Grace S. Pizzi, step-granddaughters Sydney and Jordan; step- grandson Jacob; all of Spring, TX; sisters-in-law Mary Teague, Henderson, NV; Helen Kosik-Westly and husband Leonard Levenson, Monterey, CA; Judy Kuchinski and husband David, Bradenton, FL; Nancy Colasanto and husband Eric, Marston Mills, MA; brother-in-law Joseph Kosik, Dupont, PA and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend gratitude to Rajani Nadkarni MD, "his angel", as Joe referred to her, and all the medical staff of Mid-State Medical Center especially the staff of Pavilion B and C.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 1st at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Yalesville with Military Honors to follow. There will be no calling hours and interment will be private. The B. C. Bailey Funeral Home of Wallingford has been entrusted with arrangements.
