The year was 1879. Thomas Edison demonstrated his first practical electric bulb, the first Woolworth Store was opened in Utica, NY, and Daniel Griswold opened the doors to the Griswold Funeral Home. He would operate the business for a number of years until selling it to Carl W. Bailey, who renamed the firm C.W. Bailey Funeral Home to reflect the Bailey family's ownership.

The funeral home was then located on Center Street in Wallingford next to the old Wilkinson Theater.

When Carl's son Benjamin C. Bailey joined the family business in 1934, the name was changed to C.W. Bailey & Son Funeral Home. After Carl's death in 1944, Benjamin continued operating the funeral home, and in 1952 the business was moved to its present location on 273 South Elm St. The name was then changed to the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, Inc.

Benjamin retired in 1977 and died in 1994.

Robert B. Bailey was the third generation of the Bailey family to operate the funeral home. Aside from his time serving in the U.S. Air Force, he devoted his life to caring for the families of the community and was active in the Rotary Club, Masonic fraternity, and numerous community groups. He was joined by his son and the current owner of the funeral home, Matthew R. Bailey, CFSP, the fourth generation of the Bailey family to serve Connecticut families.

In 1884, Daniel W. Fox and his wife Mary (Cook) Fox began a funeral service business with $8 and a $100 bank note. The funeral home was actually the residence of the Fox family, who primarily built and supplied caskets and services to the Plainville community. In those times, preparation of the deceased, viewing and funeral services were commonly held in the home of the deceased. 

Over time, the business passed to the Fox's grandchildren, Charles W. Diggle and Anna S. Diggle (first licensed woman funeral director in Connecticut). It was Anna's marriage to Walter Allen Bailey, Sr. that marked the beginning of the Bailey association of the funeral home. Allen had one son, W. Allen Bailey, Jr., known to many as "Bob" Bailey, who took over the business.

Bob had two sons, Bill and Jim. Bill ran the business with his father and grandfather, while Jim pursued a career in the orthopedic field. Then in 1985, Jim re-entered the profession and bought Bailey Funeral Home from his brother Bill, who retired in March of 1988. Jim and his daughter Jessica then continued to provide funeral services for the expanding funeral home. In 1996, Bailey Funeral Home was sold by Jim Bailey to a corporate consolidator of funeral homes, Carriage Services.

Local funeral directors carried on the tradition of caring and compassionate service. In 2009, Bailey Funeral Home, the town of Plainville's oldest business, celebrated 125 years in the funeral industry in our original location on Broad Street. Like our forefathers, we continue to strive in providing committed and compassionate service to Plainville and surrounding communities.

In 2020, Carriage Services sold the Bailey Funeral Home to Matthew Bailey, a fourth generation funeral director dedicated to caring for Connecticut families and the firm joined the Bailey Family Funeral Homes. The Bailey Funeral Home team is excited to bring the Bailey Funeral Home back to family ownership and to provide families in Plainville and surrounding communities the nationally recognized, award winning service that the Bailey family is known for.

Carpino Funeral Home was established in 1991 by Richard Carpino , a well known and respected funeral director who cared for families in Southbury and surrounding communities for many years.

Carpino Funeral Home was founded with the goal of embracing a full line of Funeral, Cremation, and Celebrant Services. The firm prides itself on growing with the families it serves and having deep roots in the community. Both Rick and Denise Carpino are long-time Southbury residents.

After years of serving the community, Rick and Denise Carpino began to look towards a well earned retirement. Given the great care they had for their friends and neighbors who turned to them during the sacred time of loss and wishing to preserve and honor their well earned reputation for excellent service, they transitioned ownership of their funeral home to the Bailey Family Funeral Homes.

The team at Bailey Family Funeral Homes has established a reputation in Southbury and surrounding communities for caring, compassionate and professional service. The Carpino family remains an ongoing presence at the funeral home and the Bailey family team is honored to continue their legacy of service.
