WALLINGFORD - Barbara H. Kern, 92, beloved wife of the late Nicholas Kern, departed this life on December 4, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Wallingford, CT on April 26, 1928 to the late Norman and Ethel (Shove) Hutton. Her birth made it into the Wallingford Historical records as the last to be born by a midwife. Barbara remained in Wallingford with her parents until the age of six, then they relocated to New Haven where she completed her elementary education and was a graduate of Hillhouse High School.
After graduating, she met her beloved husband, Nicholas, and together they settled down and started their family. Barbara became very active in not only raising her own blessed family but also showed motherly love to many friends' and neighbors' children whom she babysat. For many years she taught Sunday School the First Congregational Church in Wallingford and was an active member of the PTA at Parker Farms Elementary School where she also volunteered in the school library. She was extremely proud of the fact that her husband and three of her children served honorably in the United States Marine Corps. In her later years, after the loss of her husband, Barbara was fortunate enough to do quite a bit of traveling with friends. She loved to cook, especially spaghetti with homemade meatballs and sausage and her love for crocheting led her to make many beautiful creations for family and friends.
Barbara is survived by her children: Nicholas W. Kern (Deborah), David J. Kern (Patricia), Barbara Hax, all of Wallingford, and Debra Kern of New Port Richey, FL. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, Barbara is predeceased by her daughter, Karen Salah.
Services for Barbara will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s' name to the First Congregational Church, 23 S. Main Street, Wallingford. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home has been entrusted with her final arrangements. To leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.BaileyCares.com
