Bernice Asamoah Tribute

Bernice "Auntie" Asamoah was born Bernice Adzo Diaba in Kpedze, in the Volta Region of Ghana, West Africa. She spent most of her childhood in Kadjebi in the Upper Volta Region. She was a highly decorated athlete, particularly in the sport of netball where she won 4 African High School Titles. Upon completing university, she worked for the Ghanaian government before eventually following her future husband, Benoni Asamoah, to the United States in 1973. She attended the University of New Haven where she earned a masters degree in Library Sciences. For many years, Bernice worked for the City of New Haven Library System until she ultimately started her own business.

When she was not working, Bernice was an avid gardener who could often be found with her hands covered in soil. She was also a spiritual person who was committed to caring for others in need. Over the years, she provided housing, safe space and other assistance to a multitude of friends, family, Ghanaians and other immigrants as they navigated their new life in the United States.

Beloved Bernice is survived by Benoni Asamoah and their three children: Johnson Kobla Asamoah, Benoni Kwesi Asamoah, and Florence Abena Dede Asamoah, her daughter-in-laws Cindy and Casey, as well as her beloved grandsons: Kaleb Kwesi Asamoah, Christian Kofi Asamoah and Elijah Kweku Asamoah and by siblings Victoria, Francis and Comfort as well as several cousins nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by parents Albert and Gladys Diaba and siblings Esther, Robert, Daniel and John Dodzi.
