Dr. Gerald Anthony Bello, 76, of Bristol, CT, and affectionately known as "Jers," entered into eternal rest on December 3, 2023. He is the son of the late Edith (Melito) and Generoso Bello.
As a proud member of the East Street gang, an Eagle Scout, and an altar boy, Gerald's early years were characterized by a sense of camaraderie, duty, and faith. At Plainville High School, he stood out as a remarkable student, actor, and musician, graduating in 1966. His multifaceted talents only flourished further as he pursued higher education at Tufts University, graduating magna cum in 1970 with a triple major in English, French, and Music. Subsequently, he attained a PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Bello's intellectual prowess led him to a distinguished career as an instructor, professor, and department director at Hahnemann University and Drexel University in Philadelphia. While at Hahnemann, he was the creator and chair of the Arts and Sciences Department. He also supported Tufts with a permanent "Light on the Hill" feature to reflect the Tufts "Pax Et Lux" motto. A true renaissance man, his virtuosity extended beyond academia-he was a gifted pianist and musical composer whose compositions were professionally performed.
However, amidst his myriad accomplishments, Gerald's most admirable commitment was to his parents, Edie and Generoso. In an extraordinary display of love and devotion, he sacrificed his teaching position to care for them in their later years, residing with them in Forestville until their final days. During this time, Gerald became the family archivist, as he meticulously documented the Bello family history from the 19th century to the present.
A compassionate soul and a dedicated helper, Gerald approached life with his unique flair. Known for his sharp intellect, entertaining spirit, and love for challenging discussions, he was a mystic at heart-finding solace in nature and deep reflection in his backyard. But music was Gerald's true love and passion. His legacy lives on not only through his musical compositions but also through his efforts at Plainville High School, where he sought to honor influential figures from his past, such as Grace Jersey (band), Dottie Hart Baker (dance), and Sister Emma (piano). Additionally, he contributed to the Edith and Generoso Memorial Scholarship Fund at PHS, commemorating his parents by supporting deserving students.
Gerald is predeceased by his parents, Edie and Generoso Bello.
He is survived by his brothers, John Bello (Nancy) of Scottsdale, AZ and Richard Bello of Long Beach, CA; his nieces, Lindsay Bello Martin (Tim) of Rye, NY, Lauren Miles Okerman (Kyle) of Truckee, CA, and Dr. Justine Bello (Andy Olik) of Irvine, CA; nephew, Dr. Damian Bello (Leigh) of San Ramon, CA, and John M. Bello of Basalt, CO; grandchildren, Ben, Archibald, Bea, Poppy, Gabriel, and Alex; and many cousins and relatives in the Plainville and Bristol areas of CT.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 10 AM at St. Joseph Cemetery, located at 151 Farmington Ave. in Plainville. In lieu of flowers, contributions are encouraged to be made to the Edith and Generoso Memorial Scholarship Fund at Plainville High School (c/o Robert Holcumb Way, Plainville, CT 06062) as a tribute to Gerald. *If writing a check for donation to the scholarship, please make the checks out to "Plainville High School" with the scholarship fund in the memo. Bailey Funeral Home of Plainville, CT is honored to have been entrusted with Gerald's final care and arrangements.
