Elizabeth Barnes Tribute

Elizabeth Shelley Barnes of Wallingford passed away peacefully at the age of 104 on December 11, 2023 surrounded by the love of her family.  She was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 69 years, Norman H. Barnes, Jr.  She is survived by her four children and their spouses: William and Linda Barnes, Sally and David Bailey, Peter and Alison Barnes, and Barbara and Robb Ricker.  She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: David, Jonathan, Andrew, Matthew, Blake, Jackie, Liz, Alex, and Jane.  She also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren: Noah, Ava, Cameron, Eric, Luca, Owen, Claire, Charlie, Felix, Aya, Elena, McKenzie, and lucky number 13 on the way.

Elizabeth was born in New Haven to William S. Shelley and Laura E. Dudley on April 14, 1919 and was raised in Wallingford.  After graduating Lyman Hall High School, she attended the Stuart School where she was an assistant teacher in adult night classes.  She attended The Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston where she studied jewelry design and went on to teach at the Masters School and to teach arts and crafts at summer camps.

After college Elizabeth continued to teach adult night classes in silver jewelry making, owned her own business and other jobs as well including working at Kirby's Jewelry Store in New Haven and also at Tiffany's in New York City.

In 1946 she married Norman and remained in Wallingford where they raised their family and ran the family business, Barnes Orchards.  She was head of advertising and assistant manager of the retail "Apple Store" and filled in whenever needed in the office and as a cashier.  Throughout these years she wore many hats.  In both Wallingford and Guilford First Congregational Churches she chaired many committees including the Harvest Fair, Red Cross Transportation for the blood mobile, R.C. residential fund drive, Pro Musica Concert transportation, P. Dorcas Guild, the Deaconess committee, and the church nursery.  In addition, she enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother as well as serving on the board of the PTA as membership chairperson.  And it didn't stop there when they moved on to Ashlar Village.  She sang in the chorus there, joined the writing and reading groups, and volunteered in the Op Shop.  She loved sailing, painting, and spending time on Cape Cod and with her family!  She will be greatly missed by many.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring.
