Helena Gorochow

On January 28, 2020, Helena Gorochow, 72, passed away after a valiant, nearly eighteen-month fight with ovarian cancer. She was the beloved mother of Robert A. Berlin (Robby).

Helena Gorochow was born in Munich, Germany on March 13, 1947, to the late Michael Gorochow and Jrngard Schernke.

Helena was a lawyer and a teacher. She graduated from New York Law School in 1982.  Helena practiced law as an Appellate and Research Attorney/Supervisor for over thirty years, working in New Jersey, New Mexico, and Connecticut. She clerked for a New Mexico Supreme Court Justice, argued in front of the New Mexico Supreme Court, dedicated herself to improving the lives of clients she represented and helped train future generations of Connecticut attorneys. As a lawyer, Helena believed that it was her job to leave the world a little fairer, and she strove to do so every day until she retired in 2016. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Helena taught biology at New Milford High School from 1973 through 1979. She also marched for women’s rights during the 1970s.

Helena loved to travel. She hiked Machu Picchu in Peru, explored the castles of Germany and strolled the beaches on the Caribbean Islands. Helena even swam with dolphins. She also found peace on Block Island, a remote island off the coast of Rhode Island. Helena’s greatest joy was her son Robby. She loved the friends she made in Connecticut with whom she traveled and worked. She was an avid Bruce Springsteen fan. Helena adored animals, frequently donating to the Connecticut Humane Society. She cared about her community and could talk for hours with anyone regarding the law and current events.

In addition to her son, Helena is survived by her sister Ilona Achille of Melbourne, Florida and her cat, Sadie. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
