Marie Ann Ouellette, 101, of Plainville, CT, entered peacefully into eternal rest on December 8, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Catherine (Laferriere) and Honoré Blanchette, and loving wife to the late Joseph Ouellette.
Marie, a true country girl at heart, began her life on a farm in Wallagrass, Maine, where she learned the rhythms of rural life—milking cows, picking potatoes, and attending a one-room schoolhouse - often using a horse and buggy for her travels. In pursuit of new adventures, she later moved to Connecticut with several girlfriends.
In her early 20s, Marie met the love of her life, Joseph, a connection that withstood the challenges of World War II. As Joseph served in the army, Marie became a proud "Rosie the Riveter," contributing her skills as a factory technician. Three years later, after Joseph's return, they joyously united in marriage and built a life together that spanned an incredible 77 years. The couple welcomed two children into their home, and their inseparable bond became a testament to enduring love.
Marie continued her working years to Mott Corporation. In 1984, she embraced retirement, and alongside Joseph, they embarked on journeys from the northern reaches of Canada to the warmth of Florida. Marie found joy in simple pleasures, cultivating vibrant flowers and piecing together countless jigsaw puzzles.
A loving and welcoming soul, Marie's children fondly recall her open-door policy for family and friends. Day or night, guests were greeted with a warm smile and the comforting aroma of homemade stew simmering on the stove. Her happiness was infectious, and she reveled in the company of those she cherished.
In her later years, Marie was taken care of by the caring and respectful community at Apple Rehab in Plainville, CT. The staff became an extension of her family, and Marie reciprocated their kindness with genuine affection. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers who made her final years a time of comfort and companionship.
Marie is predeceased by the love of her life, Joseph Ouellette; 16 brothers and sisters; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She is survived by her children, Louella DeGumbia of Harbeson, DE, and Roy Ouellette of Bristol, CT; and grandson, Jonathan DeGumbia of Severn, MD.
Family and friends may gather to pay their respects on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, from 8:45 AM to 9:30 AM at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St. in Plainville, directly followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 94 Broad St., Plainville and burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
