Theodore Ostapowicz Tribute

Theodore Victor Ostapowicz, 97, departed this life on January 20, 2024 at Regency House Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wallingford. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Ostapowicz. Theodore (Ted) was born in Nanticoke, PA on February 28,1926 to the late Lottie Manganell and Frank Ostapowicz. He had one brother and three sisters – Barbara Huha of Philadelphia, and the late Frank Ostapovicz, Josephine James and Marian Dembinski.

Ted served as a submariner during World War II and his last posting was as plankowner and crew member on the USS Roncador (SS-301). He was honorably discharged in December 1945 as a Torpedoman’s Mate Third Class. He met his future wife at a weekly dance held at the local Nanticoke church, affectionately known as “Holy Joe’s”.  Ted married the love of his life, Elizabeth Riordan, in May of 1947.  Ted moved his wife to Connecticut to follow a post-war employment opportunity, and Connecticut became their permanent home.

Ted spent over 30 years at New Departure Hyatt, part of the General Motors Hyatt Bearing Division, as a gauge man, and served many years as a UAW union representative. He also served as President of the Bristol Group Federal Credit Union, which served all New Departure Hyatt employees, for many years.

Ted was an avid outdoorsman, and was an active hunter and fisherman throughout his life.  He served as President of the New Departure Fish And Game Club for over 30 years and was also a talented gardener, with a true green thumb. His acre lot was usually a cornucopia of vegetables, blueberries, strawberries, and more, all summer long.

Ted had five children over a twenty-year time span:  Marc, Donna, Lori, Teddy, and Brett.  The family first lived in Meriden, and then moved to Wallingford, Connecticut.  Ted and Elizabeth lived for over 60 years in the family homestead in Wallingford built by Ted and his eldest son Marc in 1960.

Theodore is survived by his son Marc Ostapowicz and his wife Sheila; his daughter Donna Carley; his daughter Lori Ostapowicz-Critz; his son Brett Ostapowicz and his wife Claire; and four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, his son Teddy Ostapowicz, and by his granddaughter Jill Ostapowicz.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff on the Star unit at Regency House in Wallingford for their excellent care and support of Theodore over the past year.
